Back to basics

Well, today I’ve decided to go back to the old ways again. I had loads and loads of laundry to catch up on, and of course ran out of laundry powder. I calculated how much time would be wasted in the heat to walk to the special store to get the special petrochemical-free powder. To be honest, I just couldn’t be arsed. Then I thought about the ten bucks it cost per bucket, and thought, ‘this is ridiculous. I have all the ingredients for the home-made stuff here!’

This is about five bucks’ worth of goodies that are earth-friendly and cheap. I’ve made a few batches of laundry powder with this lot.

I used to just Google the recipe at the times I needed to make this stuff, but I remembered the Down to earth blog has some brilliant recipes, so I saved myself some searching, and just got straight to it.

Mr 3 and Miss 18 months were absolutely spell-bound by the process of grating the soap and mixing the other two ingredients together. Mr 3 was so thrilled, he made sure to tell Miss 9 all about it when she got home!

I just recycled a bucket from the old laundry powder I was using, and an old scoop too.

Being reminded of how easy it is to make house-cleaning products made me decide to go back to just using plain old bar soap on the dishes, just like in the old days. Our petrochemical-free one is about $8, and I am so sick of all the packaging that these products come in!

I have to love going back to the simple ways of doing things. It always amazes me how much the kids enjoy learning about it, as well.

Feel free to share any recipes you might have, too! I always love hearing about more ways to clean the house in a green, cheap way.
