Our art gallery

My three year old son has really been enjoying his library books lately. His favorite books are Miffy books, and he is always requesting we borrow more. Yesterday, one of the library books we read for his bedtime stories was ‘Miffy the artist’. He enjoyed watching Miffy visit an art gallery…

… and was spellbound when Miffy went home to make her very own art gallery out of her drawings.

Mr 3 went to bed, telling me about all the pictures he liked best from the book. I had an idea…

I remembered when Miss 9, then 5, got to exhibit her own art at a gallery…

All the students in her class at school took a photo outdoors that was then printed onto canvas and displayed together at a local art gallery. It was a huge buzz for them to know that they could do that! She also got to appreciate the work of other artists when we visited the gallery.

Remembering how special this experience was to her, and seeing how much my son loved this story, I knew we had to host our own exhibit, and tonight after dinner, we got straight to work.

Drawing is great for a 3 year old's development

The excitement was building up, and everyone loved watching the pictures getting displayed on the wall, one by one.

Missy 9 turned out to be a huge help when I couldn’t stick the pictures to the wall quickly enough! Is there really such a thing  as too much art? Then, Mr 3 decided he wanted to stick art up in the gallery too.

My son loves sticky tape. Who knew?

3 year old helping

I like to let the kids help where they can during activities, it gives them a sense of autonomy and lets them learn new skills. And finally, for your pleasure, we introduce our home art gallery to you…

Displaying childrens' art

Sookie was there, as he is for most things the kids do, but he wasn’t as impressed with the art as the rest of us were!

Oh well, everyone’s a critic!

PS: we also took some video footage  of this fun activity, and you can view on it Hear Mum Roar’s facebook fan page. While you’re there, try out my fun Mothers’ Day quiz.

This is such a terrific idea! And how lucky was your daughter to have her work featured in a gallery?! Wow! I’ll have to try this one with my kiddos (5 1/2 & 2).

I agree Debi, she was very lucky indeed. I was going to take these pictures down from the wall soon after we made this gallery, but the kids are still enjoying looking at all the artwork, I’ve left them there longer. I’m not worried about the walls, as we were planning on painting them soon, anyway.

It’s funny Brandi, I was going to take it down soon after, but I can’t bring myself to do it, because the kids are still enjoying appreciating their art!
